and I agree it does take an iron will of self-discipline. Flexibility with regards to work hours and weekends. Often I worked evenings and weekends when others weren’t working to accommodate my client base. Patience for the inevitable delayed gratification meaning that much of your incoming payments had to be carefully allocated to business investment and not new dresses

I’ve been working from home for many years too. Mostly sales related positions. I have an amazing motivating company and boss(S) that I report to. They allow me free rein, because I produce the results they require. I only want to work 20 hours per week. So I track my time on google calendar and when my 20 hours are documented, then my week ends. Sometimes I work 5 days per week, 4 hours per day, other weeks I work 3 days per week (7 hours per day) I work when my potential customers reply to emails or telephone calls I’ve made. If I’ve worked more then 20 hours per week, I bank the extra hours for the next week. It works out amazing and I love my job and the company I represent!!

I am self-employed, but when I first set up my studio at home, the (male) city staffer I had approached for a municipal home-based business license, asked why I didn’t just rent an industrial space. Obviously he didn’t understand the demands of being a caregiver, wife and mother. Much of my work got done late at night after everyone else was in bed. The City no longer has the restrictions on home-based businesses requiring parking for clients, etc., but I still find that 10pm to midnight is often my most productive time, when I won’t be interrupted. During the day, I have to discipline myself to let the phone go to messaging when I’m working.
